Hornsby House School

Project outline

Hornsby House is a private primary school in Balham, the school has expanded its teaching capacity by constructing underground class rooms.

Requirement & solution

The location of the new class rooms meant that there was a need to create a feeling of light and space despite the rooms being underground. A light well was created around the stair case and glass was installed to disguise the retaining wall. Andrew Moor worked with artist Graham Jones to create an image that could be enlarged across the entire space including 1.5m high cantilevered balustrade at ground level to give the illusion of space and nature continuing underground.

Benefit

The requirement was for the glass to be decorative, allow light to pass through and be structurally safe. The panels are made up from 10mm + 10mm low Iron laminated glass with a custom DPI interlayer.
